The two Eids of 2027

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan on 1 Shawwal. The day starts with the Eid prayer in the morning; Muslims give zakat al-fitr, a small charity of food, before the prayer. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday, 9 March 2027.

Eid al-Adha falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, the day after pilgrims stand at Arafat during the Hajj. It is the day of sacrifice, followed by the three days of Tashreeq. In 2027 the Day of Arafah is expected on Saturday, 15 May 2027 and Eid al-Adha on Sunday, 16 May 2027.

Both dates come about 11 days earlier each year: in 2028 Eid al-Fitr is expected on Saturday, 26 February 2028 and Eid al-Adha on Friday, 5 May 2028.

Where the dates come from

Dates come from the Umm al-Qura calendar table, tested against the official table for every month of 1440–1450 AH. The official dates are the ones announced after the moon sighting. The countdown runs to midnight at the start of the day, Riyadh time. How we calculate dates.

Common questions

Eid al-Fitr 1448 AH is expected on Tuesday, 9 March 2027 (1 Shawwal) on the Umm al-Qura calendar. It is confirmed after the Shawwal crescent is sought on the evening of Monday, 8 March 2027.

When is Eid al-Adha 2027?

Eid al-Adha 1448 AH is expected on Sunday, 16 May 2027 (10 Dhu al-Hijjah), after the Day of Arafah on Saturday, 15 May 2027. The days of Tashreeq run until Wednesday, 19 May 2027.

When is the Day of Arafah 2027?

Saturday, 15 May 2027, 9 Dhu al-Hijjah 1448, when pilgrims stand at Arafat. The start of Dhu al-Hijjah is announced after the crescent is sought on the evening of Thursday, 6 May 2027.

How long is the Eid holiday in Saudi Arabia?

The government and private-sector Eid holidays are set by regulation and announced each year, with the exact days confirmed once the moon sighting fixes the date of Eid. Check your employer’s or the official announcement.

Why can the Eid dates change by a day?

The dates here are calculated with the Umm al-Qura calendar. Eid al-Fitr is confirmed by the sighting of the Shawwal crescent, and Eid al-Adha by the start of Dhu al-Hijjah, so either can come a day later than expected.

What do people say on Eid?

“Eid Mubarak” (blessed Eid) is understood everywhere. In Saudi Arabia you will also hear “Kul ‘am wa antum bikhair”, roughly “may every year find you well”.
